Hong Kong Central Library | Monthly Literary Talk 2025 : The Interdisciplinary Image of Hong Kong Literature
Description
Topic 1:A Continuation of Tradition: On the Teaching of Classical Chinese Poetry Writing in Hong Kong
Speaker: Prof. CHAN Nicholas Louis
Introduction: Since 1949, Chinese departments at New Asia University and Chung Chi University in Hong Kong, following the modern university system of the Republic of China, have made "Poetry Selections" a compulsory course. This has become the only unbroken legacy of classical Chinese poetry writing in mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Simultaneously, local scholars have published works on poetry writing. This lecture will first review the curriculum, teaching methods, and handouts of "Poetry Selections" in Hong Kong universities. It will then, using poetry writing competitions since the 1990s as an example, discuss the promotion of poetry teaching, showcasing the enduring elegance of classical Chinese literature in Hong Kong.
Topic 2:Landscape and Culture:A Literary Walking Tour at The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Speaker: Dr. YIP Ka-wing
Introduction: In 1991, Professor Lo Wai-luan published "Hong Kong Literary Walks," which helped us understand the relationship between Hong Kong's landscape and literary works and laid an important foundation for the subsequent promotion of the concept of "Literary Walks." This lecture features the Chinese University of Hong Kong as the focal point of a "Literary Walk." Guests will admire scenic views such as New Asia College's "Heaven and Man in Harmony Pavilion," Main Campus's "Million Avenue," and Chung Chi College's "Unfulfilled Lake." The lecture will also feature lively and engaging descriptions of CUHK, highlighting the value of cultural heritage and embracing the spirit of humanistic life.
